LASIK (Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis) is an FDA-approved outpatient procedure that uses the excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct your vision. LASIK typically takes less than 10 minutes to perform on each eye and is one of the most frequently performed healthcare procedures in North America. Ophthalmologist, Neil Griffin, M.D., performs LASIK surgery in the new state-of-the-art Myrtle Beach facility at Griffin Eye Center.
What is Wavefront-Optimized LASIK?
Because no two corneas are alike, our center offers patients Wavefront-Optimzed LASIK. With Wavefront-Optimized LASIK, a combination of sophisticated measurements of each individual cornea are used to create a unique treatment plan designed to provide patients with a greater chance of having 20/20 vision as compared to conventional LASIK, the potential for better vision than is possible with contacts or glasses, less incidence of glare and halos and potentially better overall vision, even at night.
What is Blade-Free LASIK?
In a Blade-Free LASIK procedure, the flap of the corneal tissue is created by using a computer controlled, femtosecond laser instead of a bladed instrument. This laser allows the surgeon to create a customized flap of uniform thickness utilizing the natural curvature of the cornea. Once the cornea flap is created, the excimer laser is used to reshape the inner layer of the cornea, allowing for rapid visual recovery. With Blade-Free Custom LASIK, it is now possible to perform LASIK on many patients who were previously dismissed as poor candidates due to thin corneas.
What is Topography Guided?
A unique treatment that personalizes the ablation to the cornea— Topography-guided LASIK is for patients that are nearsighted with and without an astigmatism. We offer the Contoura® Vision technology. The treatment is the first topography-guided LASIK to receive FDA approval.
Topography-Guided LASIK is also especially helpful to patients with astigmatism, as no two astigmatism patterns are the same. This personalized LASIK procedure addresses these differences much more accurately than in the past.
What is SMILE LASIK?
Another vision correction option is SMILE, or “Small Incision Linticule Extraction”. Simply put, a laser is used to create a thin, contact lens-shaped layer just beneath the surface of the eye and then a small opening, through which the layer is removed. SMILE is the latest advancement in laser vision correction for myopia (nearsightedness), providing LASIK-like outcomes in a minimally-invasive procedure.
LASIK is a safe and popular alternative to glasses and contact lenses, with millions of satisfied patients. The best way for you to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK is with a complete medical examination of your eyes and personal consultation in our office. LASIK can treat a broad range of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism in people who are at least 18 years old, who are in good general health with a stable prescription and who don’t have any eye diseases. LASIK, like any
other surgical procedure, has risks of complications and should be discussed with your eye care provider.
