It seems like this COVID-19 pandemic is bringing out the best in people and the worst in people.
All around, I see grocery store workers, first responders, and healthcare professionals stepping up and giving their best, giving their all, sometimes giving their lives, in service to others. I see people making masks, working at food banks, and checking on elderly or ill neighbors, friends, and family. I see people looking for ways they can help other people.
On the flip side, I see people saying they don’t care who gets hurt, saying they should be able to do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want. They seem to have a complete lack of awareness of any social contract, any sense of humans being responsible for each other, any sense of “love your neighbor as yourself,” or any sense of, “I am my brother’s keeper.”
I think if we can stay aware of the forces that are pulling us to the best in ourselves, and the worst in ourselves, we can make the best possible choices as we move through this very new and different territory.
